Kg - 3rd Grade

All Kindergarten – 3rd grade students will receive 45 minutes of Arts instruction, per week in the following areas: 

  • General Music 
  • Visual Art 
  • Dance 
  • Theatre 
  • Media/Library Enrichment 

Elementary students also receive 4 days of Physical Education and enrichment through the Maker Space, where students explore and create through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).  

4th - 5th Grade

All 4th – 5th graders attend general Elementary Music and Visual Art, one day per week.  Additionally, 4th – 5th graders will select a “Mini-Major” in one of the six major arts areas that they will participate in, three days per week. Those areas are: 

  • Band* 
  • Chorus 
  • Orchestra* 
  • Visual Arts 
  • Theatre 
  • Dance*

*expenses involved (ie owning or renting an instrument, purchasing dance attire)

All mini-majors, except for Visual Arts, are performance-based. When performances or productions are in rehearsal, there is a possibility of after school rehearsals and/or concerts. It is expected that students involved in these performances will attend all events related to their arts area.

All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will be enrolled in a “Major Area” course, which is a 3-year commitment.  All majors, except for Visual Arts, are performance-based. When performances or productions are in rehearsal, students are expected to attend all events related to their arts area. 

Band

All Band Majors will take 1 Band Major Class, plus 1 additional music class.  

Band Major Classes: 

  • Beginning Band* 
  • Intermediate Band* 
  • Symphonic Band* 

Additional Music Classes: 

  • Jazz Band (requires instructor approval)* 
  • Piano 
  • Handbells 
  • Digital Music 
  • Chorus (as elective) 
  • Orchestra (as elective)* 
  • Guitar

Chorus

All Chorus Majors will take 1 Chorus Major Class, plus 1 additional music class.  

Chorus Major Classes: 

  • Female Beginning Chorus, Level 1*
  • Female Advanced Chorus, Levels 2-3*
  • Male Chorus, Levels 1, 2, 3*

Additional Music Classes: 

  • Show Choir (requires instructor approval)* 
  • Piano 
  • Handbells 
  • Digital Music 
  • Band (as elective)* 
  • Orchestra (as elective)* 
  • Guitar

Dance

Dance Majors will have a double block (90 minutes), which includes Traditional Ballet and Modern.  Dancers are expected to purchase their individual dance attire.  

The state requirement of enrollment in Physical Education (PE) is waived for Dance Majors.  

Orchestra

All Orchestra Majors will take 1 Orchestra Major Class, plus 1 additional music class.  

Orchestra Major Classes: 

  • Beginning Orchestra*
  • Advanced Orchestra*

Additional Music Classes: 

  • Swinging Strings (requires instructor approval)* 
  • Piano 
  • Handbells 
  • Digital Music 
  • Band (as elective)*

  • Jazz Band (must play electric bass and requires instructor approval)

Theatre

Theatre Majors will have a double block (90 minutes), which includes Theatre and Acting.  Expenses involved may include makeup kits, safety goggles, work gloves, hearing protection, etc.

Visual Arts

All Visual Arts Majors will take 1 Visual Arts Major Class, plus 1 additional Visual Art class.  

Visual Arts Major Classes: 

  • Two-Dimensional Art*

Additional Visual Arts Classes: 

  • Three-Dimensional Art* 
  • Photography*
  • Digital Art (Fab Lab)*
  • Technical Theatre

*Visual Arts classes may require a lab fee.

General Electives

During the school day, students will take an additional one (1) or two (2) electives, depending on enrollment in Intensive Math and/or Reading. These courses are considered General Electives.
